Job Description: We're looking for a talented professional to join our Data & AI group and help reshape the way we categorize the content of The Wall Street Journal and other media content.
As a Taxonomy Manager, you will collaborate in designing, implementing, and evaluating a taxonomy system that fits the unique content of our publications. You'll work with our Editorial, Product and Engineering teams to ensure it fits our business needs. Together with a dedicated team of Data Scientists, you will support the development of the content categorization models tailored to the taxonomy. The ultimate aim is to build a taxonomy framework that is sustainable, adaptable, and beneficial to our Newsroom today and in the future.
We're looking for someone who has hands-on experience in taxonomy structures and can clearly communicate the benefits and impacts of any proposed change. Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships across different teams within a large organization will be essential. You should be comfortable advocating for new processes and gaining support from diverse groups.
You will report to the Director, Extraction.
You Will: Clearly identify and communicate when a topic should be added, removed, or modified within the taxonomy. Implement the changes in the taxonomy system, ensuring proper tagging and classification rules are updated accordingly. Provide well-defined guidelines and deliver clear, actionable feedback on taxonomic decisions to the Newsroom. Support the team's Director establishing a strategic vision for how the taxonomy will evolve and expand. Work with our Engineering, Editorial and Product teams on the rollout of taxonomy changes and ensure accurate metadata tagging choices are made. Establish a communication channel with our technology vendor to fix bugs. You Have: Relevant experience in a taxonomist or information architect role OR be able to speak to a large scale taxonomy project from beginning to end that you played a lead role in. Knowledge of the importance of a good taxonomy in a media company and its impact on products from automated data reports to personalization to how users discover our content and everything in between. A strong problem-solving and analytical mindset with solid evidence of managing projects that drive commercial success. The ability to navigate a large organization and build strong cross-functional working relationships across different teams (Newsrooms, Product, Engineering, RevOps, etc). Demonstrable experience in getting buy-in for new processes from numerous stakeholders. Experience with software relevant to creating taxonomy, with passion for learning and discovering new tools and AI-related technologies. Ability to work to tight deadlines and to high quality standards. Knowledge of digital marketing principles preferred. Positive outlook on change and a flexible approach to the work environment and structure. An openness to different views and opinions and an appreciation for team diversity.
