PhD Position in Stem Cell Research: Exploring the Genetics of Diabetes Our group is currently seeking a highly motivated candidate to undertake their thesis research in the Pancreatic Islet Development and Beta Cell Mass laboratory, led by Alberto Bartolomé, at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas "Sols-Morreale" (CSIC/UAM) in Madrid, Spain.
We are offering a predoctoral contract associated with the TALENTO Program (Comunidad de Madrid).
The position is to start as soon as possible.

Project Description Our laboratory specializes in the study of genetic factors affecting human ß cell mass and function, focusing on understanding both polygenic (T2D) and monogenic forms of diabetes.
We employ human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and differentiation protocols to model the development of the human endocrine pancreas, enabling us to examine the influence of gene variants on this process.

The current project involves the analysis of loci associated with T2D-GWAS, as well as exploring how genetics impact the quantity of insulin-producing ß cells (ß cell mass) – a critical factor in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes.
The project encompasses in vitro modeling of development using state-of-the-art protocols, including the application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology and its related techniques such as CRISPR-screening.
In addition, we perform in vivo functional assays after the transplantation of hPSCs-derived endocrine clusters.

Our aim is to identify novel genetic markers that may serve as cost-effective tools for diabetes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies.
The potential clinical implications are immense, potentially enabling stratified patient care in the era of personalized medicine for diabetes.

Requirements Candidates should hold a degree in a field related to Biomedical Sciences. To be admitted to the doctoral program, 300 ECTS credits or a university master's degree is required. Experience in cellular culture and molecular biology is required. Previous experience working with stem cells and the CRISPR/Cas9 system will be considered a significant asset. Good communication skills in English are essential.
