A new opportunity for a planetary scientist to work for Telespazio UK, on-site at ESA-ESAC (Spain) providing support to ESA's new Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission and ESA's longstanding CLUSTER mission.
Responsibilities / Duties: A planetary scientist is required to join the support archive scientists' team at ESAC to support the JUICE mission.
The role is to support the provision of the best possible JUICE archive to the planetary science community.
This breaks down into several areas: Provide support to the planetary science lead in the development of general requirements and the testing of the planetary science archive (PSA).
Develop mission specific requirements for the PSA, such as advanced capabilities to support the specific science areas of the JUICE instruments.
Provide knowledge and requirements from the PDS4 standard and its implementation in the PSA archive to the JUICE instrument teams, via regular meetings and interactions.
Provide support to the mission downlink development team at ESAC via requirements, testing and producing supporting data to the mission.
Provide support to the general planetary science community.
Contribute to the scientific output of the support archive scientists team.
The successful applicant will have an allocation of 20% of their time for research.
Qualifications / Experience: PhD or Master's degree in Planetary Science or equivalent.
Significant experience in satellite and possibly in terrestrial systems requirements analysis, design, implementation and operations, and associated management experience.
Essential Skills: A background in one or more of the JUICE science areas.
Knowledge of the calibration of the data sets provided by the Cluster plasma instruments.
Familiarity with planetary data standards, ideally PDS4.
Excellent organisational skills, experience in organising a project or team.
Good communication skills.
Coding experience, ideally in Python.
Desirable Skills: Familiarity with XML, in particular with the PDS4 implementation.
Familiarity with the CDF data format.
Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence.
Qualities: Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Pro-active attitude to problem solving and customer focus.
Comfortable in an international working environment.
Fluent in written and spoken English.
Should be willing to travel to ESA establishments and/or other European locations.
