Dehn is an international company that is expanding into Spain and they are going to assemble a great engineering team to help them improve their applications and continue to protect and save lives with their hardware and software that prevents overloads. Do you want to lead the tech decisions of their engineering team? Read on!
? What does DEHN do?DEHN is a German company with over a century of history. They were born creating protections for lightning and electrical surges, and over the years they have evolved towards hardware and software related to this same field. Their devices and software are responsible for preventing electrical surges and hazards.
It is an international company, with more than 2000 employees all over the world, and they have more than 20 offices in different countries, including Spain, where their subsidiary is DEHN Ibérica.
If you notice, one of their latest milestones on this timeline is the appointment of their CTO, Christian Höhler in 2020. This shows the dimension that technology has in this stage of the company, where software is essential.
In addition, in 2021 the DEHN digital solutions GmbH came to life and their role is to support the digital transformation of DEHN. Their mission statement is: "We enable DEHN to shape its leadership in the digital future". They do this by showing & encouraging global collaboration without boundaries in an agile way, while fostering a data-driven culture, a customer-oriented mindset and automated processes, and building great customer software, digital services and smart solutions.
What is the product like? They have hundreds of internal and external applications. From their own patented software that helps them measure thousands of environmental data, to electrical control software that saves lives, to their management applications. A company with such a history also has a very broad technological history.
The Spanish delegation has grown a lot in recent years, and it is also a strategic point for their logistics. That is why they have thought about establishing a technological operations center, a HUB, in Madrid. They have started with some operations personnel, but their intention is to create a team of 30-40 people in the coming years.
They are having problems stabilizing the infrastructure due to the accelerated growth of recent years, in addition to wanting to create new software that replaces old applications and helps them automate many actions.
What is the challenge? The main challenge is to create and consolidate a great team from scratch. Your mission will be to lead one squad by landing the technology strategy into measurable and actionable steps, managing different teams, growing the company, and making it a great place to work. There will be other tech leads like you under the head of engineering direction, so you will be able to be helped by others and help with your knowledge.
They have created a 7-year technology strategy, where one of the main objectives is to take inventory of the multitude of applications they have, understand them well, see which ones are vital, which ones need revision or refactoring, and which ones need to be completely redone. And to put all of this into a roadmap so that the Spain team can start working on it.
In addition, you will work on stabilizing the cloud infrastructure together with the Germany team, increasing and automating it to prevent failures and downtime.
It's a great challenge. Do you dare to take it on?
You will have completed your onboarding, which will include a high-level understanding of the business as well as how the platform modules are composed and where they are located. You will also have had interviews and coffee talks with some members of the development team so that you understand the challenges from the inside.
You will be familiar with (almost) all the main subproducts and will know who to turn to if you have any questions.
You will be a key member of Dehn leadership team and will be able to outline the tech strategy for the next engineer teams.
You will work, alongside the team, on optimizing all software components, including deployments, with a focus on performance and observability.
You will be the technical and cultural reference of the team, applying engineering best practices, creating style guides, and managing your team's evolution through 1:1s and performance reviews.
You will be responsible for delivering new features and updates, adjusting context and scope --if necessary-- to deliver value as soon as possible.
You will be in charge of nurturing and improving an engineering culture within the company, advocating for innovation, passion for the business, and people as a fundamental part. They have different teams and the size of the team differs from project to project and also from the phase of the project. And the teams have a lot of decision-making power, which makes it easy to get things done.
They use a lot of UX research in the early stages of the projects to get the necessary market data to make the right decision and create an MVP quickly and then continue to improve and extend the product with the help of the UX team, which is part of the SCRUM team. This also includes the feedback and ideas from the development team and they have an active part in designing the product.
They work in an Agile framework with Jira and Azure DevOps and documentation is done in Confluence and in the tickets themselves. This way all information is always available.
They work in Scrum and with Sprints with all the standard ceremonies, which means Refinements and Planning Meetings happen before the Sprint starts and after the Sprint is finished Retros will happen.
The timetable is flexible. You will be the person in charge of making these types of decisions. The engineering team's working day is self-organised and they believe that this is the best way to work asynchronously and autonomously, especially with the team's growth in the short-medium term in mind.
