As a Construction Project Manager for HV Substations, you will be part of a highly creative and efficient team tasked with building and supporting the operation of HV substations that power our cloud business. This technical role requires a high level of judgment in utility management. AWS Substation Project Managers are part of a fast-paced team delivering HV substations for our Customers. Leveraging knowledge of electrical engineering, our Project Manager will autonomously lead and advise HV substation construction projects at scale.
Our HV substations are industry-leading examples of energy-efficient, cost-effective designs. The Senior Construction Manager is ultimately responsible for the oversight and review of all disciplines including civil, electrical, mechanical, controls, and architectural. The Senior Construction Manager will also be responsible as a team member for delivering the most highly efficient and sophisticated electrical and mechanical systems in the world.

Key job responsibilitiesConstruction project management and oversight of construction-related activities as they relate to new HV substation projects in Ireland, Sweden, Capetown, and Spain. The role involves travel up to 40% of the time. This will include the ownership of the project scope, timeline, and budget.Leverages knowledge of electrical engineering principles such as breaker coordination studies and switch-gear sequence of operation to impact design and construction of HV substations or large-scale mechanical and electrical plants.Effectively communicates with team members, senior management, and leadership across the organization to keep all relevant stakeholders up to date with important contract information.Provides value engineering: reducing costs through creative solutions with no impact on quality and reliability (new designs, technology, or construction methods).Negotiates easements/wayleaves with landowners, utilities, etc.Leverages clear written and verbal communication skills and ability to use data to justify conclusions.Smoothly navigates working with location-specific electrical utility providers.Overseeing of risk and change management through procurement, delivery, and handover of design and build projects.A day in the lifeDirect interface with construction general contractors during the bidding, award, execution, and project closeout/punch list phases.Work with general contractors and vendors to deliver efficient and high-quality project turn-overs in line with electrical utility requirements.Lead negotiations with general contractors and evaluate bids/proposals with detail and accuracy.Creation of construction project scope and request for proposals.Capital requests/financial analysis of construction work including change orders, purchase orders, and invoicing.Construction submittal review.Construction project quality control including the creation of a commissioning plan and support of the commissioning process.Recording and reporting key construction metrics to team members and management.Drive teams to perform troubleshooting and root-cause failure analysis associated with equipment or electrical failures.Be a leader within the group as well as within internal and external teams that support the data center.Travel to HV Substation sites for engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, mechanical system reviews, start-up testing, and full commissioning, as required.About the team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or an equivalent engineering science OR 4+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.7+ years of recent experience in construction management of large, complex projects involving large-scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants.General contractor and vendor management experience (request for proposals, bidding, change orders) associated with construction and project execution.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSFormer experience in controls and commissioning of HV Substation projects.Demonstrated understanding of mechanical engineering principles for cooling systems.Former experience of leading contract and commercial negotiations and administration of design and build projects.Certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP), LEED, and/or Certified Construction Manager (CCM).Former experience of monitoring contract dates and deliverables to keep the project on track and help mitigate any potential issues before they develop into significant problems.Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
