Position Summary

NYU Madrid seeks a lecturer and academic staff member at our NYU Madrid study away program. This position, located at NYU Madrid, reports to the Assistant Director of NYU Madrid.

This role requires both teaching and administrative work, and will typically teach 2 courses per semester and one course in the summer, that primarily supports first-year away students and their curriculum; provide student advising; collaborate with local staff; mentor local faculty; and coordinate academic and co-curricular events related to the first-year experience.

They will facilitate effective communication between Madrid and New York staff and faculty. The other courses will not be restricted to first-year students but will be for the larger program at the site; depending on the needs of the students, it may be either a regular credit-bearing course or a noncredit course equivalent (e.g., a co-curricular series of workshops).

As a key member of NYU Madrid with special responsibility for the first-year experience, including engagement with the academic orientation program, the Coordinator will facilitate connections between the New York portal campus and the Madrid academic center for faculty and students, and facilitate student integration into the network through curricular and co-curricular initiatives.

Qualifications

Principal Duties

First Year Related Activities (35%):

Provide oversight and support for academic services and activities at NYU Madrid throughout the year primarily for first-year students, as well as upper class students, graduate students, visiting students from other institutions, and others.

Manage the Academic Disciplinary process and other academic conduct issues for first-year students.

Collaborate with NYU colleagues on curricular issues, particularly the Office of Global Programs and LS (course development, oversight and review of syllabi, faculty hiring and performance review, course evaluations, pedagogical support, etc.)

Typically teach 2 courses per semester and one course in the summer or course equivalents that could be a January or summer term course, special topics seminar, leadership or internship discussion section, etc.

Collaborate with NYU colleagues to develop course-based, academically focused public programming.

Student-related activities:

Advise students, primarily first-year students, working in collaboration with administrative colleagues in Madrid and New York.

Work closely with New York and Madrid staff, plan and assist with on-boarding and orientation for new students during the summer prior to their matriculation.

Provide guidance and training to students to ensure they are connected to resources when navigating bias and other matters contrary to an inclusive community.

Faculty-related activities (20%):

Liaise among local faculty, the Office of Global Programs and the LS Program in NY; assist in recruitment, orientation and evaluation of faculty.

Participate in ongoing assessment of the program and coordination of faculty development for instructors of first-year courses.

Provide pedagogical support for lecturers to prepare and deliver in person, hybrid and remote courses.

Provide guidance and training to ensure faculty are connected to resources when navigating bias and other matters contrary to an inclusive community.

Collaborate with NYU colleagues to develop course-based, academically focused public programming and co-curricular academic programs.

Manage development and implementation of inclusive guest speaker database.

Provide high-level administrative support for academic issues.

Program-related activities (10%):

Work with NYU Madrid staff to design and implement co-curricular activities for the first-year cohort at NYU Madrid, as well as events and other program-related activities.

Assist in planning and implementing transition activities for first-year students, including late-August Orientation and preparation for return to New York.

Collaborate with Wasserman Center and Global Programs staff to support and develop structured career development programming.

Identify community service opportunities for students unable to secure an internship.

Provide guidance and training to students to ensure they are connected to resources when navigating bias and other matters contrary to an inclusive community.

Serve as a liaison among NYU Madrid, the Office of Global Programs in New York, especially to ensure that academic initiatives, principles, and concerns are communicated effectively across sites.

Fulfill other appropriate duties as assigned.

Required Education

A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in an appropriate field preferred by the date of appointment.

Required Experience

A minimum of three years of university-level teaching experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Understanding and empathy with needs and expectations of international students.

Team player with excellent interpersonal skills.

Strong organizational ability.

Computer literate with good knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

Excellent written & oral communication skills, with experience of addressing public audiences.

Preferred Experience

Prior experience mentoring faculty, as well as experience in coordinating or overseeing administrative projects in a university setting is desirable.

Experience of teaching NYU's first-year away students or general education, preferably with a global emphasis.

Publications or other evidence of outstanding scholarship, creative work, or relevant professional activity.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data in NYU systems and be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards.
