Senior Dust And Air Quality System Research Engineer - (Dz-851)

Detalles de la oferta

Context And Mission

Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center, led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group aims at better understanding and predicting the spatio-temporal variations of atmospheric pollutants along with their effects upon air quality, weather and climate.
The group contributes to a variety of forecasting activities. The dust component of the MONARCH model (previously known as NMMB / BSC-CTM) runs operationally at the first WMO Regional Specialized Meteorological Center for Atmospheric Sand and Dust Forecast, the Barcelona Dust Forecast Center (BDFC), and contributes to multi-model ensemble forecasts both at the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System Regional Center (WMO SDS-WAS RC) for Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe, and the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction (ICAP). Both WMO Regional Centers are co-hosted by BSC and the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
The group also develops and maintains the CALIOPE air quality system (CALIdad del aire Operacional Para España), which provides high-resolution air quality forecasts over Europe and Spain using the in-house emission model HERMES. CALIOPE is currently based on the WRF and CMAQ systems, and its transition to use the MONARCH is in progress.
The Earth Science department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center searches for one developer willing to work on the further development of the new operational air quality forecasting system (AQFS) and the maintenance of the current AQFS CALIOPE. The position will support the developments to support this system, port to Mare Nostrum 4 and will face different and state-of-the-art technologies. Furthermore, this position will be part of the Computational Earth Sciences group team dealing with many other IT profiles.
Key Duties Implementation, execution and monitoring of Dust Forecast Systems (SDS-WAS, BDFC) in a High Performance Computing environment.
Contributing to the development of operational systems, evaluation tools for Dust and Air Quality forecast applications, taking into consideration user requirements and operational constraints.
Interact with members from the Atmospheric Composition and Earth Services Groups.
Maintenance of the current and future User Interactive Dashboards and development of new features.
Further development of the current visualization tools for the efficient display of huge amounts of spatio-temporal datasets.
Monitoring the progress and performance of the suites and solving problems as they arise, using operational tools, procedures and internal expertise.
Supporting the team in other tasks related to the operational production systems and Observational Data-Downloading / Formatting.
Contributing to documentation and training of users of the test and production suites for the forecast applications.
The selected candidate will co-lead the "Data and Diagnostics" team, managing tasks and deliverables and supervising team members.
The candidate will report to the Computational Earth Sciences group leader.
