Who You'll Work With You will be based in our Lisbon or Madrid office as part of McKinsey's Legal Department. Reporting to the Managing Counsel in Iberia, you will work closely with a collaborative team of lawyers across Europe and within the broader department. You will partner with various stakeholders at the Firm, including senior leadership, finance, corporate tax teams, and consultants.

Your impact within our firm As Senior Contracts Counsel, your primary focus will be client service, leading the negotiation and structuring of contracts between McKinsey and its clients. Acting as a trusted legal advisor, you will provide solution-oriented guidance that balances legal rigor with business priorities.
In this role, you will engage in a dynamic mix of advisory, drafting, and negotiation work, collaborating closely with key stakeholders across the region. You will provide day-to-day legal counsel to senior leaders and consultants, offering strategic guidance on a wide range of client-related matters.
Your core responsibility will be to structure, negotiate, and execute commercial arrangements in Portugal, Spain, and occasionally other European jurisdictions. This will involve direct negotiations with McKinsey clients and their legal teams across various industries, ensuring agreements align with the Firm's professional standards, legal requirements, and strategic goals.
You will provide solution-oriented legal advice to internal stakeholders on a broad spectrum of issues, helping them navigate risk, compliance, and syndication procedures. Additionally, you will support them through McKinsey's risk and approval processes, including interactions with the Firm's relevant committees.
Your work will include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of contracts across areas such as M&A, Digital & Analytics, and performance-based fees. These will include master consulting agreements, study-specific consulting agreements, private equity agreements, waiver letters, confidentiality agreements, statements of work, vendor agreements, and benchmarking agreements. You will also provide essential legal input for Request for Proposal (RFP) responses, helping teams address complex legal considerations.
A key aspect of your role will be creating, updating, and distributing standard contracts and related documentation in alignment with McKinsey's Legal Department policies and procedures. You will track and manage contract flow, maintaining a comprehensive and up-to-date database of contractual arrangements.
In addition, you will support McKinsey consultants by providing the appropriate forms of agreement for various engagement-related legal issues. You will advise them on commercial contract matters and contribute to the development, implementation, and interpretation of the Firm's internal policies and professional standards.
Collaboration will be central to your role. You will work closely with colleagues across the Legal Department and other functions, including risk, compliance, external relations, office leadership, and local administrative leaders, both in Europe and globally. You will also collaborate with contract counsels and paralegals on contract-related tasks and other responsibilities as needed.
Staying current with legal and regulatory developments in Portugal and Spain, you will provide timely advice on how changes in the law may impact McKinsey's operations, while developing and sharing your expertise with others. You will also contribute to firm-wide initiatives and ensure the effective delivery of legal services. Your qualifications and skills Law Degree & Experience: Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a law firm or in-house legal department with a focus on commercial law and contractsMultilingual Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. The ability to draft and negotiate contracts in all three languages is a plus, as you will be working in a multilingual environmentSpecialized Knowledge: Strong expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: Banking and Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A), and/or Digital and Analytics (DnA)Organizational Skills: Ability to manage a high volume of work, prioritize tasks, allocate time effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentIndependent & Collaborative Work Style: Ability to work autonomously with moderate supervision, while remaining adaptable in a dynamic, decentralized work environment.
