Position: About the role
The ECF's Spain programme aims to advance domestic policies that drive emissions cuts in the real economy and to strengthen Spain's diplomatic influence at the European and global levels. This programme aims to build political will for more ambitious action on climate change; and to develop solutions to the policy and practical challenges to decarbonisation of the entire economy. Additionally, the ECF's Land Use programme focuses on helping Europe address greenhouse gases from the land-use sector, both in Europe and internationally. The programme works with a wide range of partners in civil society, think tanks, business groups and the research community in support of positive action to change the debate about land use and climate change and to accelerate policy solutions in the areas of agriculture, food, forests and nature.
To this end, the ECF's Spain programme is seeking a Senior Associate to assist in the management of the priorities of the ECF's Spain programme on Land Use, especially food and agriculture policy, and connect this to the ECF's wider work on land use across Europe. The Senior Associate will also be responsible for managing a global project on how to transform industrial animal agriculture to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises, and will be brought into a vision of the networks/infrastructure needed to enable them to deliver that theory of change.
Key responsibilities
The role will offer the opportunity to help shape the direction of the ECF's work on land use in Spain and is an exciting opportunity for the right person to grow, develop topical expertise and build their network. The post holder will play a key role in providing strategic advice, dealing with grant management, and monitoring and evaluating the progress of different workstreams. The person will be part of the ECF's Spain programme and will directly engage with the ECF Land Use programme and other partners in designing and aligning strategies.
Reporting to the ECF's Spain Director and working closely with the ECF's Land Use programme (working time will be divided 50/50 between both programmes), the Senior Associate will be responsible for:
Strategic implementation: supporting the Land Use and Spain programmes in implementing a multi-annual strategic grant-making programme within Spain to move the Spanish political debate on food, agriculture and land use and make Spain a leader within the EU in the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and other major policies that relate to land use and climate, engaging with a wide network of partners, monitoring and evaluating the process and impact of initiatives and grants, and acting as a liaison to report regular progress to external partners.Research activities & prospecting: supporting the Spain and Land Use programmes in scoping the landscape around local and national climate politics and advocacy, as well as identifying and coordinating potential new projects and partners.Networking: building partnerships with key individuals across the policymaking, business and civil society communities in Spain and Europe; managing and growing the stakeholder network around land-use issues; convening meetings; representing the ECF Spain and Land Use programmes at meetings and organising follow-up; and, with the Land Use director, engaging with the philanthropic community.Strategic grant-making: developing the scope of work for different ECF projects; soliciting and validating proposals from potential Spanish partners; commissioning studies from consultants and managing their work; facilitating coordination among partners; supporting reporting requirements.Internal coordination and communication: to facilitate the advancement of the ECF's Land Use strategy in Spain, the Senior Associate is a member of both the ECF's Land Use programme and the ECF Spain teams; thus, s/he will both strengthen the capacity and knowledge of the ECF's Spain programme on agriculture and other land-use.
