The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. About the department
The Scientific DevOps Engineer will join the Scientific IT (SIT) team, reporting to the Head of SIT. The team currently consists of 5 members (including the head) and manages all storage and computational resources used for scientific research at the CRG. The post-holder will work closely with scientific researchers, particularly bioinformaticians who are heavy users of the HPC resources.
The role
The Scientific DevOps Engineer will play a critical role in understanding how our scientists use the HPC resources available at the CRG and help them optimize their computational workflows. By improving the efficiency of resource usage, this role will allow CRG to get better value for money from the infrastructure and reduce our carbon footprint.
Key tasks will include:
Work with scientists to develop pipelines that use the cluster efficiently.
Develop tools and methods to simplify running workflows on the cluster.
Develop and use reporting to determine where improvements in cluster usage can be made.
Collaborate with storage and data management specialists to optimize storage use for HPC and communicate best practices for storage use by scientists.
Improve existing scientific software where possible.
Whom would we like to hire?
Professional experience
Must Have
5+ years working as a Bioinformatician developing and managing analyses on an HPC cluster.
5+ years of Python programming experience.
Education and training
Master's or PhD with a significant Informatics component.
Languages
Proficiency in English.
Spanish/Catalan is an advantage.
Technical skills
Experience writing software using compiled languages such as C/C++, Java, Go, Rust.
Knowledge of standard bioinformatics methods and tools.
Competences
Ability to discuss complex IT concepts with Bioinformaticians.
Able to work well as part of a team.
Exceptional problem-solving skills.
Ability to take responsibility and work on own initiative.
The Offer – Working Conditions
Contract duration: Indefinite contract for scientific-technical activities.
Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales.
Target start date: January 2025.
