BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science under one roof, currently employing over 1000 staff from 60 countries.The BSC is committed to promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and we value the diverse experiences and skills that candidates bring to our team.Context And MissionThe Department of Earth Sciences at BSC is active in atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction, and climate services.
The Climate Services Team (CST) is seeking a climate scientist to develop downscaled products for health, agriculture, and energy sectors, focusing on sub-seasonal, seasonal, and decadal climate services.The successful candidate will collaborate with the Global Health Resilience (GHR) group to design decision-support tools for global health challenges related to climate-sensitive infectious diseases.
This position will involve working on various projects across Europe, Asia, and Latin America & Caribbean region.Key DutiesApply statistical downscaling methods to obtain climate data at high spatial resolution.Perform user-oriented research and facilitate technology transfer.Participate in EU projects, including teleconferences, workshops, and meetings.Contribute to disseminating results in peer-reviewed papers and conferences.Collaborate with scientists to enhance synergies.Develop training materials for users and decision-makers.Contribute to developing a framework for providing downscaled products as climate services.Develop R packages and workflows for spatial downscaling techniques.RequirementsEducation: MSc in physical sciences, applied mathematics, environmental sciences, or related discipline.
A PhD is useful but not strictly required.Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience:Experience handling, analysing, and validating large climate model datasets.Experience with climate statistical analyses using R or Python.Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages.Competences:Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and international team.Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.Capacity to interact and build strong relations with climate, health, and computer scientists.Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, and work under deadlines.ConditionsThe position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
