The Institute The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG is composed of an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team supported by a flexible and efficient administration and high-end, innovative technologies.
In April 2021, the CRG received the renewal of the 'HR Excellence in Research' Award from the European Commission, recognizing the Institute's commitment to developing an HR Strategy for Researchers, designed to align practices and procedures with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code).

The role The volume of data used in scientific research has grown significantly in recent years, requiring the development of specialized methodologies and processes for managing such data. Concepts such as the FAIR data principles, reproducibility, and scientific integrity all play a part in the management of scientific data. Considering this, the CRG is looking for a Research Data Specialist to expand on existing policies and guidelines, liaise with researchers and the Core Technology Units to guide, improve, and implement new methodologies, and train users. They will work as part of the Scientific IT (SIT) Team and help develop tools, systems, and procedures to aid this effort.

About the team The post holder would be part of the SIT reporting to the Head of SIT. The team currently consists of 5 members (including the head) and manages all the storage and computational resources used for scientific research at the CRG. Additionally, the post-holder would attend and take an active role in the Research Data Management Committee, which includes a wide range of CRG members with expertise in scientific data management (scientific, legal, strategy and funding, IT, training, technology, and business development).

Whom would we like to hire? We are seeking a skilled Scientific Research Data Management Specialist with a passion for advancing scientific research through effective data management. You will play a crucial role in optimizing data workflows, ensuring data integrity, and supporting researchers in harnessing the full potential of their data.

Responsibilities Develop and implement data management strategies to facilitate efficient handling, storage, and analysis of scientific research data produced at the CRG. Collaborate with researchers to understand their data requirements and provide guidance on best practices for data collection, storage, and documentation while promoting the FAIR principle. Help design and maintain databases, ensuring data security, accessibility, and compliance with relevant regulations. Collaborate with the Strategy and Funding Department to formulate budgetary allocations for research proposal data management plans. Additionally, liaise with the scientific project managers from the same department to ensure the correct execution of data management plans. Stay current with industry trends and advancements in scientific data management to continuously improve processes. Train researchers on data management tools and best practices, fostering a FAIR data-driven culture within the organization. Collaborate with IT and other departments to integrate data management solutions into existing systems. Professional experience We are interested in applicants who have a scientific background and have worked with large and diverse data sets within a research environment.

Desirable skills and experience Project management experience in Scientific Research. Knowledge and experience of open science with a specific emphasis on compliance with European research data management regulations. Knowledge in defining and managing scientific metadata and ontologies. Proven experience with iRODS, OMERO, or other data management systems. Knowledge and experience of semantic web technologies. Scripting ability, ideally in Python. Experience using Linux, including bash terminal. Experience using a computational cluster with a batch scheduler (e.g., slurm, grid engine, etc.). Education and training You hold at least a bachelor's degree in a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

Languages You are proficient in English; Spanish/Catalan is an advantage.

Competences Strong interpersonal communication skills and capacity to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Negotiation skills. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Attention to detail and solution-oriented. The Offer – Working Conditions Contract duration: Open-ended technical and scientific activities contract linked to Scientific IT unit activity.
