Offer Description We invite applications for a 1-year position as a pre-doctoral support researcher in time-domain astronomy at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences at the University of Barcelona (ICCUB), Spain. The successful candidate will join the research group led by Dr. Nadejda Blagorodnova as part of the ERC-funded project CET-3PO.
The group's research focuses on the study of the common envelope phase in massive binaries via observations of luminous red novae (LRNe) transients. As a member of the research group, the successful candidate will perform tasks of support with target selection and observations, application for telescope time, development of data reduction pipelines, and data reduction tasks for photometry, spectroscopy, and polarization data. The candidate will also carry out multi-wavelength analysis using time-domain survey data for the transients of interest.
An MSc in astronomy or related field is required. Positions can start as early as October 2024. The remuneration includes full benefits and limited research and travel allowance.
The ICCUB is an interdisciplinary centre hosting a vibrant fundamental research program in cosmology, astrophysics, and particle physics, with a strong technology unit supporting our participation in international collaborations in observational astronomy and experimental particle physics.
The ICCUB is located in Barcelona, known for its near-perfect weather year-round, beaches, iconic parks, striking architecture, and vibrant neighborhoods. It is also a hub for the technology sector and hosts major technological events.
The candidate must hold an MSc in astrophysics and fulfill the requirements to be admitted into the Physics PhD program at the Universitat de Barcelona.
A full-time work contract (37.5 hrs/week) is offered. The researcher will have the possibility to participate in teaching activities for professional development (not obligatory).
Eligibility Criteria A specific committee will evaluate the applications using the following criteria:
Grade point average of the academic transcripts from the applicant's bachelor's or master's degree studies (or 1st and 2nd cycle): up to 5 points out of a total of 10.
Curricular merits: up to 1 point out of a total of 10 in accordance with the specific criteria listed in Annex 1.
Suitability for the tasks to be performed within the framework of the research project or research support position to which the successful candidate will be attached: up to 4 points out of a total of 10.
Selection Process The specific committee will agree upon an award proposal and draw up a prioritized shortlist of candidates who have achieved a minimum of five points or declare the call for applications null and void if none of the applicants reach the minimum score.
The award proposal will be published in the UB's electronic office and must include the total scores of the candidates that have received at least five points.

IMPORTANT: For studies completed abroad, applicants must submit their equivalent grade point average as per the grading scale for Spanish universities.
The candidate proposed for hiring must accept the job offer within 10 working days from the date of notification of the selection.
