CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB
Job location: ICRA – Catalan Institute for Water Research, Girona (Spain)

Expected start: November 1st 2024
Temporal Position: The position is for 12 months.
Gross Annual Salary package: €29,900 – €35,650 depending on merit
RESEARCH AREA: WATER QUALITY AND SAFETY (QS)
Research Line: QS1. Chemical contaminants and microplastics in the aquatic environment.
The research topics of this research line comprise the study of the fate of emerging microcontaminants in the aquatic environment through advanced analytical methods. This includes the evaluation of the uptake and accumulation of emerging microcontaminants in agro-systems irrigated with regenerated water as well as the assessment of their environmental impact.
KEY DUTIES
The researcher will evaluate the presence, and distribution of selected emerging micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals (including antibiotics), endocrine disruptors, and their transformation products in all types of environmental samples (water, soil, sediments, vegetables, and aquatic biota).
The tasks to be accomplished by the postdoc fellow involve:
Upgrade of analytical protocols based on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (including high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)) for the analysis of emerging pollutants in water, soil and/or biota.
Monitoring of emerging pollutants and other suspects in the whole water cycle based on analytical methods target, suspect and non-target.
Participation in project meetings, writing of protocols, scientific reports, and scientific papers.
Applying for competitive grants as well as leading knowledge transfer projects and contracts.
A small proportion of the time will be allocated to communal services such as joint laboratory maintenance.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: PhD in Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science
Skills:
Experience in data handling software, mesocosms, and field experiment planning and sample handling and extraction.
Experience in handling and analysing environmental samples (including water, soils and biota); proven experience in environmental and analytical chemistry for the determination of organic pollutants (pharmaceuticals, endocrine disrupting compounds, etc.).
Experience with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for suspect and non-target analysis.
Knowledge in the study of the fate of emerging pollutants, in the aquatic and terrestrial environment.
Experience in laboratory, field studies and monitoring campaigns.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; must be creative, flexible, and eager to learn and to expand his/her scientific network.
