Offer Description
CITCEA-UPC seeks to hire four (4) Doctoral Candidates to work on the MSCA Doctoral Network Project: "Building decentralized, Distributed and Local micro-grids for Decarbonization Electrification challenge''(IDEAL4GREEN), offering a training program that covers various aspects, such as advanced technical skills and collaborative communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. The doctoral candidates will work to develop their doctoral thesis for each partner institution (the four topics below are only for CITCEA-UPC) on the topics below:
Doctoral Candidate 3 Topic:The PhD position "Design of Decentralized Microgrid Controllers for Bottom-Up System Integration with Enhanced Grid Support Capabilities" offers a unique opportunity to develop cutting-edge solutions for integrating microgrid systems. The research focuses on designing controllers that enable the interconnection of microgrids into a networked system, ensuring decentralized operation while providing enhanced grid support services. Key objectives include identifying the limitations of current decentralized microgrid approaches, developing advanced grid-forming controllers, and incorporating ancillary services to improve vertical system integration. The candidate will test and validate these strategies in both simulated and real microgrid environments to assess their effectiveness.
This position includes an 18-month secondment with Siemens Energy (UK), a leading energy company known for manufacturing equipment for renewable plants and grid automation solutions to support countries in their energy transition journey. During the secondment, the candidate will focus on introducing ancillary services into the control strategies and testing them using Siemens Energy's stability assessment tool.
This collaboration will provide hands-on experience with industry-leading power system analysis techniques, allowing the candidate to bridge their research with practical applications in energy systems. By working alongside Siemens Energy experts, the candidate will gain valuable insights into real-world challenges and solutions, positioning them at the forefront of innovations in decentralized microgrid control.
Responsibilities:The Doctoral Candidates will actively participate in comprehensive training programs aimed at enhancing both technical and transferable skills. This includes workshops, seminars, and conferences that cover areas such as advanced control systems, resilience strategies, and economic planning for microgrids. Additionally, each Doctoral Candidate will collaborate closely with industry partners through 18-month secondments, where they will apply their research in real-world industrial settings, gaining hands-on experience and refining practical solutions for energy systems. The Doctoral Candidates will also contribute to project reporting, provide regular updates on their research progress, and ensure project milestones are met. Their findings will be communicated and disseminated, e.g., through presentations at international conferences and contributions to peer-reviewed publications.
