Detalles de la oferta

19 jun | Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) | Madrid The new ERC research group on Stratospheric Composition and Climate led by Dr. Gabriel Chiodo at the Institute of Geosciences (Spanish National Research Council, IGEO-CSIC) invites applications for a:PhD researcher, 100%to be filled no later than Fall 2024 for four years. It will be part of the ERC project entitled "Stratospheric cOmposition in a changing CLIMate: drivers and mechanisms (SOCLIM)" ( https://www.gabrielchiodo.com/projects/soclim ).Within SOCLIM, we seek improved understanding of the interaction between stratospheric composition and atmospheric circulation, and their influences on climate and variability. The advertised PhD position is part of WP1:"Assess and quantify the impact of stratospheric composition on predictability (SOCLIM-S2S)"The aim of WP1 is to diagnose the capability of state-of-the-art existing prediction systems (IFS from ECMWF) in representing observed variability of ozone and water vapor in the stratosphere, with particular focus on extreme variations on inter-annual time scales. We seek to improve the representation of stratospheric composition in Sub-seasonal to Seasonal time-scales (S2S) prediction systems and the related dynamical and radiative feedbacks, and explore the physical mechanisms whereby stratospheric composition affects predictability. The PhD will work on these tasks and in particular, she/he will evaluate the impact of the existing simplified ozone schemes ("Hybrid Linear Ozone" model) in the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) model, and the (to-be-developed) more comprehensive chemistry-coupled IFS model. The PhD will run and analyze output from numerical simulations with the IFS forecasting system, comparing the model against satellite data and observations.She/he will explore the physical mechanisms linking stratospheric composition to circulation and climate. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue international research visits at several partners' institutions in the EU.Salary range: 21.000€ - 23.870€ (gross per year) depending on the experience. The salary grade (and range) is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to CSIC.Requirements: Applicants should have a good MSc degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or a related field. Some programming experience would be highly desirable, ideally including data analysis and visualization, as well as readiness to work (or learn working) with weather and climate models.Applications and deadline: Please send all your application documents (as pdf files) to ****** including (i) a cover letter, (ii)a CV and at least two contacts for reference letters by June 26th 2024.IGEO-CSIC is committed to a policy of providing equal employment opportunities for both men and women alike, and therefore encourages particularly women to apply for the two positions offered. For further information, please contact me at ****** or ****** or ****** look forward to your application! #J-18808-Ljbffr
