About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured.

We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences.

If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.

Context And Mission
The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes develops, among other research tools, global climate models to perform a range of climate experiments at storm and eddy-resolving spatial resolutions. These tools have opened a very exciting path to revisit properties of the climate system such as climate predictability at subseasonal to decadal time scales.

This PhD vacancy aims at exploring the relative merits of the new category of global climate models of very high resolution (10 kms or higher) to predict regional aspects of climate, including the impact of the initialisation, the necessary adaptations to the experimental set up to cope with limited computational resources, and the processes that could act as new sources of forecast quality.

Key Duties Prepare the initial conditions to perform retrospective climate predictions Conduct different sets of retrospective climate predictions at eddy-resolving scales exploring the impact of different tuning/model choices Analyse the relative merits of each model configuration for the predictive skill, with a particular focus on the signal-to-noise paradox Requirements Education
MSc in atmospheric, ocean or climate sciences, applied mathematics, computer sciences or any related discipline. Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
Knowledge of process-based climate models of either the ocean and the atmosphere; familiarity with ocean-atmosphere coupled models will be valued. Knowledge of climate predictability and prediction. Understanding of the challenges associated with the use of high-performance computers and the analysis of large databases. Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Experience with version control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued. Experience in coding with scripting languages will be valued. Theoretical understanding of climate dynamics will be valued. Fluency in English Competences
Ability to prioritise tasks and work under set deadlines. Ability to work as part of a highly-coordinated large team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
