Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a highly technical and critical individual to solve the most challenging problems in our industry.
Our Data Center Global Services Team is a global team responsible for the design and operation of industry-leading, large-scale, business-critical facilities. Each team member is a highly motivated individual with demonstrated design and analytical expertise in the efficient function of mission-critical facilities. At Amazon, we leverage unique opportunities presented to us by owning everything from the substation to the server and back to the cooling systems. We are diverse, upbeat, creative, team-oriented engineers and managers working daily to develop architectures and technology that are driving future data center designs. Amazon Engineers are constantly challenged to quickly deliver the highest quality and most technically efficient data centers in the world.
Our Data Center Mechanical Engineers:Understand key problems, propose and analyze multiple solutions to produce the most energy-efficient, cost-effective, and rapidly scalable mechanical designs achievable. They ultimately provide the vision and rationale for Amazon's data center mechanical designs to leadership, while ensuring current systems meet performance and operational standards.Understand the key aspects of status quo data center mechanical systems to identify key sources of high capital/operational costs, reduced efficiencies, high levels of maintenance, security issues, and safety risks as improvement areas in next-generation data center designs.Have a strong understanding of business analysis and practices including Total Cost of Ownership and Return on Investment models.Work closely with hardware designers to optimize the interfaces between IT equipment and the facility, as well as understand future trends and initiatives in IT equipment technology.Provide total project management and oversight of construction, including ownership of the project scope, timeline, and budget.Plan and forecast budgetary needs for the engineering group that supports future projects and growth.Work independently and have periodic reviews with Principal Engineers both inside and outside the DCC organization, as well as management reviews.Manage total product & project quality including the creation, oversight, and execution of commissioning plans.Record and report key metrics to team members and management. For issues that arise in data centers, drive teams to supply root-cause analysis, quantify customer exposure, provide remediation, long-term corrective measures, and ensure these efforts are documented to prevent recurrence. Key Job ResponsibilitiesCreate product & project specifications, drawings, owners' requirements, requests for proposals, and capital requests.Actively define, scope, and participate in project & product teams focused on delivering innovations in next-generation data centers.Provide direct influence over the mechanical design and construction of new data centers and general capital endeavors.Conduct reviews of equipment and system performance with end-users during and after initial deployments.Grow and coach the engineering team through interviews, hiring, one-on-one coaching, and mentoring. Minimum Qualifications5+ years of engineering experience in the design or construction of data centers with excellent communication and writing skills and the ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, deployment to mass production, and define data center system-level architecture, specify/document performance and equipment requirements, create/communicate conceptual designs, and create and maintain project documentation.Experience with the design, operation, and reliability engineering of power-delivery equipment, mechanical equipment, large-scale mechanical systems, building management systems, or building control systems.Statistically analyze large data sets to validate thermal and mechanical performance of critical data center systems as well as characterizing environmental conditions for use in equipment specifications.In-depth understanding of heat transfer and fluid dynamics and the ability to interpret the results of CFD analysis, as well as experience designing mechanical economization technologies.Ability and willingness to think outside the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs without impacting quality and reliability, and perform complex business case analysis to justify the project scope and present the justification to management in a high-level review.Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA, as well as Project Management Professional Certification or training.Experience in the design, installation, operation, or commissioning of chillers, cooling towers, CRAC units, chilled water loops, mechanical plant sequence of operations, centrifugal pumps, piping design, air handling units, and duct sizing is highly desired.
