DESCRIPTION: As a Construction Project Manager for HV Substations, you will be a part of a highly creative, efficient team tasked with tackling fascinating and challenging problems building and supporting the operation of HV substations that power our cloud business.
This technical role requires a high level of judgement in utility management.
AWS Substation Project Managers are part of a fast-paced team delivering HV substations for our Customers.
Leveraging knowledge of electrical engineering, our Project Manager will autonomously lead and advise HV substation construction projects at scale.
Key job responsibilities: You will provide construction project management and oversight of construction related activities as they relate to new HV substation projects in Ireland, Sweden, Capetown, and Spain.
You will directly interface with construction general contractors during the bidding, award, execution, and project closeout/punch list phases.
You will work with general contractors and vendors to deliver efficient and high-quality project turn-overs in line with electrical utility requirements.
You will create the construction project scope and request for proposals.
You will lead within the group as well as within internal and external teams that support the data center.
Travel to HV Substation sites for engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, mechanical system reviews, start-up testing, and full commissioning, as required.
A day in the life: Travel to other Data Centers up to 40% of the time.
Capital requests/financial analysis of construction work including change orders, purchase orders, and invoicing.
Oversee construction project quality control including the creation of a commissioning plan and support of the commissioning process.
Recording and reporting key construction metrics to team members and management.
Drive teams to perform troubleshooting and root-cause failure analysis associated with equipment or electrical failures.
Negotiating easements/wayleaves with land owners, utilities, etc.
Value engineering: reduce costs through creative solutions with no impact on quality and reliability (new designs, technology, or construction methods).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or an equivalent engineering science OR 4+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
7+ years of recent experience in construction management of large, complex projects involving large-scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants.
Demonstrated understanding of electrical engineering principles including breaker coordination studies and switch-gear sequence of operation.
Demonstrated understanding of mechanical engineering principles for cooling systems.
Demonstrated contractor and vendor management experience (request for proposals, bidding, change orders) associated with construction and project execution.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience directly related to the design and construction of HV substations or large scale mechanical and electrical plants.
Experience with large scale technical operations, mission-critical mechanical/electrical infrastructure, or large-scale compute farms.
Experience dealing with location-specific electrical utility providers.
Experience of risk and change management through procurement, delivery, and handover of design and build projects.
Experience of leading contract and commercial negotiations and administration of design and build projects.
