Organisation / Company: CEU San Pablo University
Department: Pharmacy Faculty
Laboratory: Institute for Applied Molecular Medicine Nemesio Díez (IMMA-ND)
Selected candidates will be provided with special assistance for proposal writing and development. Our University has been beneficiary of 7 MSCA PF since 2017, including one MSCA-PF with an evaluation of 100/100 in 2021.
We look for researchers interested in studying the molecular determinants underlying the immunopathologic immune response associated to Influenza virus and respiratory bacteria coinfections , supervised by Dr. Estanislao Nistal Villán - https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2458-8833
Dr. Nistal-Villán Research Group is located at the Institute for Applied Molecular Medicine Nemesio Díez (IMMA-ND) at USP-CEU. The group is composed of the PI, two Postdoctoral researchers, three PhD students, one technician, and a Master's student. Eventually, undergraduate students collaborate with us. The Group works together with Groups at Nacional Center for Microbiology at Instituto de Salud Carlos III (CNM-ISCIII), Fundación Vithas, National Center for Biotecnology (CNB-CSIC), and Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid. International collaborations include the Microbiology Department of Icahn School of Medicine, at Mount Sinai in New York, and the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Geneva.
Our group is interested in a main area of research, the innate immune response against Influenza virus and respiratory bacteria coinfections . We have a strong background in studying the cell signaling and regulation mechanisms that control the antiviral response including the type I IFNs and proinflammatory cytokines. We study antiviral response mechanisms and alternative inducers and repressors of type I IFN and proinflammatory cytokines. Relevant publications in the area of research include:
Influenza A virus infection alters the resistance profile of gut microbiota to clinically relevant antibiotics. Microbiol Spectr. 2024.
Determinants of poor clinical outcome in patients with influenza pneumonia: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Int J Infect Dis. 2023.

Research Project Description:
Despite multiple advances in the knowledge of the virus pathology, the improvement of health conditions, and annual influenza and pneumococcus vaccination campaigns, influenza-related secondary bacterial infections, especially in patients of advanced age, cause thousands of deaths every year in Europe. The causes underlying the complications of these superinfections require further analysis.
Dr. Nistal-Villán coordinates a group focused on the study of the relationship between virus and host and the pathogen recognition mechanisms that trigger the immune response against infections. We are especially interested in Influenza virus and bacteria coinfections and the pathogenic responses associated with both stimuli. We are interested in a multi-omic analysis of the virus, the bacteria, and the infected cell behavior, the Type I interferons (IFN-I), particularly, IFN-ß, as well as proinflammatory cytokines play a key role in these responses. Understanding the mechanisms involved in infection detections can be used to propose strategies to control immunopathologic responses as well as vaccination protocols or to develop better treatments.
The molecular determinant factors triggering the immunopathologic response to these infections, as well as the epigenetic determinants that may determine an exacerbated response of the organism against them are of special interest to us. Understanding the acute immune response against influenza and S. pneumoniae and other respiratory bacteria obtained from clinical and animal isolates is pivotal to seek for conserved factors that train the immunopathology of influenza and bacteria coinfections.
We look for candidates interested in studying the molecular determinants underlying the immunopathologic immune response associated to Influenza virus and respiratory bacteria coinfections. We are particularly interested in applicants who are interested in a holistic approximation to the study of these infections.
Application:
Applicants must have teamwork abilities, experience in molecular and cellular biology, and an immunology background. Experience in virology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and experimental multiomics will be valued.
An expression of interest shall be sent to Dr. Estanislao Nistal Villán (******). Your file should contain the following elements:
A short CV: Only CVs with considerable scientific achievements will be considered.
A one-page research proposal.
A short statement explaining why USP-CEU would be the best host institution for your research.
Two letters of reference.
For MSCA-PF 24 call, at the deadline for the submission of proposals (11/09/2024), candidates shall have a maximum of 8 years of postdoctoral research experience and must not have resided or carried out their main activities in Spain or more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the abovementioned deadline.
Those files received before 15th of June will be considered for MSCA-PF 2024 call. Applications received after this date will be considered for other calls after discussion with the candidate.
