High-Fidelity Multiphysics Modelling For Battery Cells And Systems (R2)

Detalles de la oferta

Context And Mission
The European Commission (EC) is fully dedicated to addressing Climate Change, the greatest challenge of our contemporary world. Thus, many initiatives and changes have been proposed to achieve a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. The various forms of transportation (including road, waterborne, airborne, and rail) collectively account for approximately 25% of the EU's total CO2 emissions. Over the past few years, batteries have played an essential role in decarbonizing diverse applications, such as transport and industrial activities, owing to their extended lifespan, high energy density, and impressive power density. Nonetheless, internal or external faults and charge and discharge cycles reduce the battery performance and potentially give rise to serious safety concerns like the thermal runaway. Therefore, developing efficient and high-fidelity numerical models is essential to effectively examine and understand the complex processes involved, such as the thermal runaway.
This Post-Doc position offers the chance to participate in a research project coordinated by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) to advance the batteries field further and contribute to sustainable energy technologies development. VTT is a Finnish research institution leader in developing technological solutions for a sustainable society in terms of energy systems. BSC's participation in this project aims to perform high-fidelity simulations to understand better battery cells and systems' complex coupled multiphysics phenomena. This numerical data will provide insights into the prototyping design and abuse testing to increase performance and safety.
The successful candidate will work with a team of experienced researchers from the Propulsion Technologies Group of the CASE Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). The BSC team is a multidisciplinary group with researchers from all disciplines and a strong background in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and advanced software generation with High-Performance Computing (HPC). Specifically, the researcher will develop an efficient HPC-based computational framework to study the thermo-electro-chemical processes in the battery cell and system using the code Alya from BSC. Alya already contains many required physical models, such as Navier Stokes equations, heat transfer models, and multi-component reactive scalar transport. The model developed by the candidate will be verified and validated against the experimental data gathered from the prototypes provided by the cutting-edge equipment of project partners.
Key DutiesDevelop a high-fidelity thermo-electro-chemical model of battery using HPC-based technologies.Couple this thermo-electro-chemical model with a fluid dynamic solver.Perform several high-fidelity simulations to analyze the safety aspects.Participate in the project meetings.Validate the numerical results with the experimental data.Interact with other BSC researchers and all the project partners.RequirementsEducationThe candidate should hold a degree in Aerospace, Civil Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or similar fields.
Essential Knowledge and Professional ExperienceGeneral knowledge of fluid mechanics, chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, numerical methods.Good knowledge of any programming language.Additional Knowledge and Professional ExperienceParallel programming for HPC is not necessary, but will be considered an asset.
CompetencesStrong analytical skills.Ability to work independently and within a team.Good communication and team-working skills to work in a multidisciplinary team.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to work within a team to complete tasks on schedule.Fluency in English is required, and Spanish will be convenient.ConditionsThe position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department. We offer a full-time contract, a good working environment, a highly stimulating atmosphere with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, an extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and support for the relocation procedures.
Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.
Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement.
Salary: We offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
Starting date: ASAP.
