The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is a regional fisheries management organization established to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best use of living marine resources.Reporting LinesThe Fishery Officer reports to the Senior Fishery Officer/Fisheries Team Leader and maintains regular contact with relevant officers.Technical FocusSupport to and participation in the implementation of policies and work programmes at subregional level related to capacity development and scientific advice to the GFCM.Key FunctionsResearches, analyses and provides access to fisheries and aquaculture technical data and information.Produces a variety of technical data, statistics, information and reports.Provides technical, statistical, and/or analytical services on various studies and assessments.Participates in the development of improved/updated technical tools, methodologies, and databases.Collaborates in capacity development activities within Members.Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings.Supports resource mobilization activities.Specific FunctionsContributes to the preparation and implementation of the GFCM work programme.Provides technical support to the work of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries.Ensures the compilation of technical elements in support of fisheries management advice.Contributes to analysing information on Mediterranean fisheries and produces reports.Represents the Organization at relevant international meetings and conferences.Performs other related duties as required.CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWINGAdvanced university degree in fisheries sciences, marine sciences or a related field.Five years of relevant experience in quantitative analysis and assessment of wild marine fish stocks.Working knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language.Technical/Functional SkillsWork experience in more than one location or area of work.Working knowledge of French and Spanish is a strong asset.Experience in fisheries management and assessment of commercial stocks.Experience in the formulation of advice within Regional Fisheries Management Organizations.Experience in the Mediterranean region is considered a strong asset.HOW TO APPLYTo apply, visit the recruitment website at Jobs at FAO and complete your online profile.For further assistance, please create a one-time registration with FAO's client support team.
