Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an Energy and Construction Underwriter to join our Property team in Madrid.
The Energy and Construction Underwriter will be responsible for:
Developing and expanding new business opportunities
Analyzing exposures according to BHSI's risk quality and confidence framework
Negotiating fair insurance conditions
Deploying necessary capacity for all type of construction projects
Operational programs in the power generation, oil & gas, mining, and chemical segments
A good understanding of engineering concepts, risk management capabilities, and strong business acumen are necessary to achieve our team objective of being a reputable Energy and Construction team with an outperforming combined ratio.
We are seeking an individual with:
A solid background in underwriting Energy and Construction business
Strives for excellence in every area from analyzing risks to delivering customer and broker service
You should be comfortable working closely with the Claims team, underwriters, and Risk Control engineers from across the broader team. Good data and file management skills are required.
In addition, necessary character, relationship building, and negotiating skills to help lead and further build a profitable book of business are of the utmost importance.
The successful candidate will be focused on a positive customer experience while maintaining sound underwriting discipline. This position is a great fit for an Underwriter looking to expand their responsibilities and underwriting knowledge with an experienced and well-regarded unit within a top global insurance company.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Underwrite and grow the Energy and Construction book of business profitably within the BHSI risk appetite. Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships. Underwrite Construction projects (EAR, CAR) and Energy business while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and profitability. Contribute towards the further development of Energy and Construction underwriting at BHSI both in Spain and globally. Collaborate to develop and strengthen the Spanish branch operations beyond the regular underwriting activities.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
3+ years of underwriting experience in Energy and Construction (both project and annual policies). Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly. Strong underwriting acumen. Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts. Experience marketing to specialized brokers. Strong collaboration and team building skills. Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications, and presentation experience. Good understanding of natural catastrophe peril modeling and pricing for multi-year construction policies. Analytical mindset: approach problems in a logical, structured, and data-driven manner; being curious, asking questions, and seeking out the best data and analytical tools. Engineering or equivalent technical education.
