Director of Public Relations, Volunteer About the Pet Cancer Foundation
The Pet Cancer Foundation's vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Estimates suggest that 12M dogs and cats are developing cancer every year, roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America.
We need to do more for our furry friends, and we're building a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help them and their families. Our team requires experienced senior-level media relations leaders as we set out to define our strategy and launch our organization to the broader public. That's where and how you can help us.
About the Position
As our volunteer Director of Public Relations (East and West), you will build and lead your team to carry out media relations initiatives to generate press coverage to attain "brand and product" visibility for all that we do. Being a creative thought leader, you will create and drive a strategic approach to media and community relations across the organization to maximize results. You will build and lead an internal division of Public Relations volunteers, work with external PR agencies when contracted, and teach our consumer-facing volunteers how to communicate our message accurately and authentically.
Duties and Responsibilities: Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic media relations plan to broaden awareness of our non-profit sector while building PCF's identity across key stakeholder audiences.Create a media relations strategy that will allow PCF executive and board leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media, public officials, and key influencers.Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the sector and organization. Work with the board and staff to recognize media relations opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support the organization's vision.Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed.Supervise and coach a Media Spokesperson to lead all media interactions that help promote and positively impact the organization.Actively cultivate and manage Canadian press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the sector, as well as PCF's programs, special events, public messages & other projects.Manage relationships with any 3rd party communications related vendors or consultants.Mentor and develop volunteer staff using a supportive and collaborative approach.About You:
Do you have an extensive network of contacts within the media space in Canada? We're looking for people that know who the key people are by name, if they have pets, have their contact information in their phone, and can reach them in 2 calls or less.
You have:
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public (media) Relations, Journalism, or English.5-10 years' successful experience in Public/Media Relations, and Corporate Communications (internal and external).Exceptional expertise in driving media relations programs, events, and platforms.Excellent communication, messaging, and storytelling skills.Experience working with and providing communication guidance to interns and early-career communications staff.Proven track record developing new ideas and campaigns across a broad spectrum of today's media and marketing channels.Strong project management skills; highly organized with a strong attention to detail.Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills; ability to build and develop relationships across levels. What We Provide You With:
Volunteering with PCF in this critical role is a generational opportunity to contribute to building a best-in-class worldwide organization that will make a difference in millions of animals' lives in the decades to come. The challenges of building an umbrella cancer agency from inception will provide learnings while expanding your network of contacts that will be of assistance to your advancing private or non-profit career.
Expectations:
- There are 2 positions available for eastern and western Canada.
- These positions work virtually from within Canada.
- Expectations regarding a time commitment are in the range of 8-10 hours per week on average.
- Flexibility in hours of availability will be necessary during campaigns and periods of high public outreach.
- This volunteer position could potentially lead to other roles within the organization.
