Context And Mission
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing centre in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 800 staff from 55 countries.
We are particularly interested in this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research.
We seek a passionate and talented Data Scientist/Engineer to join our team. In this role, you'll have the chance to apply Data Science methods to multiple hazard & risk scenarios, with a strong emphasis on wildfires. We look for someone who is a quick and willing learner, and who is not afraid to get involved and form part of a close-knit team.
Key Duties Contribute to developing data products, including data acquisition & cleaning, and modelling. Analyze large datasets to discover trends, patterns and insights. Build and deploy predictive models using statistical techniques. Build, test and deploy at-scale machine learning solutions. Work with cross-disciplinary teams (scientists, software & data engineers, data scientists, and product managers) in R&D projects. Requirements Education Degree or Master Degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Machine Learning, or other data-centric disciplines.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience 3+ years of experience in writing clean and maintainable Python code (daily coder). 3+ years of experience with core Python analytics libraries. Strong problem-solving, mathematical and statistical skills. Used to apply systems coming from research departments into operational products. Programming skills (Python, C/C++, Javascript, and others). Must be able to find the "right tool" for the job. Experience developing systems on top of and for Linux environments. Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Experience with geospatial (earth observation) data would be highly valued. Experience with open-source GIS libraries, data formats and standards would be valued. Experience dealing with danger applied to natural disasters, better used to wildfires would be greatly valued. Competences Deals well with ambiguity. Approaches the job with a focus on providing excellent research focused on applied science. Ability to take ownership of and work independently to manage projects through to completion. Very strong analytical and organizational skills. Detail orientation, thoroughness, reliability, and ability to prioritize are required. Proficiency in English is a must. Good handling of Spanish is required. Conditions The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department.
