Description
Basic Function: Provides lead expertise and takes professional responsibility for mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering work for a multi-modal transit system. Involves design, review, and/or the investigation and diagnosis of various complex mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering systems; part level and system level testing, including system integration testing; preparation, modification and review of METRO processes, design criteria, technical specifications and drawings, engineering reports, contracts, etc. for various projects; following Safety Management System (SMS) processes.
Responsibilities and Specific Duties
Provides lead mechanical & electro-mechanical engineering expertise and support for LRT, BRT, local bus, HOV Lanes and/or other transit corridors, METRO facilities and equipment, and other projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Designing and analyzing structures such as mast arms and/or columns to secure rail/bus/HOV signals and signs.
Various piece parts and assemblies for the maintenance of LRVs/buses - such as lifting equipment and supports.
All related mechanical design documents, engineering analyses and reports (including Finite Element Analysis, FEA reports), test plans, procedures and reports, manufacturing instructions and drawings and assembly, installation and integration documents for various mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment and systems.
Creating or aiding in the creation of Safety Management System (SMS) processes, including creation and/or review of Preliminary Hazard Analyses, Hazard Analyses, Verification Matrices and Safety Certificates.
Familiarity with ASME's Y14 codes and standards (including GD&T;) for designing mechanical systems and creating engineering drawings (in AutoCAD and MicroStation, etc.).
Management of complex projects either directly or through the management of outsourced engineering.
Monitoring performance of work to ensure project is meeting designated milestones, on schedule, and in compliance with contract and technical requirements.
Working with a team of engineers and other stakeholders to accomplish project milestones and deliverables.
Acting as a mentor for junior staff.
Providing excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
Promoting safety awareness and following safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field required.
Years & Experience Required
10 years progressive responsibility in the design and analysis of mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment and control systems, with preference to experience relating to public transportation vehicles and electrified systems.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Licensed as a Texas Professional Engineer or able to acquire licensure within 6 months of hire.
Comprehensive experience and expertise related to CAD software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation, and experience creating and reviewing for approval Finite Element Analyses using Pro/Engineer, SOLIDWORKS, ANSYS, etc.
Familiarity with, or membership in the following is preferred: ASME, AREMA, NAFEMS.
Experience with rail track and structures is preferred.
Strong communications (written/verbal) skills required.
Proficient in MS Office products.
Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's license is required for the job; must meet METRO's motor vehicle records requirements.
