Job Description
We seek to hire a senior legal counsel/legal counsel of commercial legal who will be a key member of the growing legal team supporting AliExpress consumer-facing e-commerce platform and services in the European Union, the UK and other markets, with a particular focus on Spain, Poland, the rest of Eastern EU, and the UK. The attorney will be based in one of our European offices (Madrid, Amsterdam, or London), or alternatively our Hangzhou main office.
Primary Responsibilities:
Reporting to Head of Legal for Europe, AliExpress, advise on legal aspects of the platform's international expansion of current and proposed new e-commerce offerings.
Provide advice to business teams on legal aspects of the implementation of commercial agreements, business models and strategies, business operations, marketing activities, and product offerings.
Research local laws and regulations in the local jurisdictions and manage outside counsel.
Support on regulatory enquiries, including but not limited to Requests for Information (RFI) under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) or other legislation.
Provide advice on platform compliance, product listing compliance, local and cross-border logistics, import/export, and payment acceptance.
Negotiate, draft, and review contracts and commercial agreements.
Develop in-house legal tools and policies, and conduct training for business units.
Position Requirements:
Legal license to practice as an EU qualified lawyer (preferably in Spain, Poland, or the Netherlands) or in the UK; can consider bar admission in another EU jurisdiction or other Commonwealth jurisdictions.
For senior legal counsel, 10+ years, and for legal counsel, at least 7 years of post-qualification experience at a leading law firm and/or corporation. In-house experience is highly welcome, with a strong preference for e-commerce/tech-related experience.
Experience with e-commerce and/or cross-border trade transactions (such as import/export, logistics, payments, financing, etc.) preferred.
English language proficiency is essential. Fluency in another European language (preferably Spanish, Polish, or Dutch) and/or in Chinese is a strong plus (i.e., ability to hold business meetings, as well as reading and writing).
Highly motivated and able to work independently and under pressure in a start-up environment.
Sincere interest in technology, innovation, and business, along with a strong commercial sense and solid foundation in legal training.
High integrity and desire to collaborate with others.
Open to frequent international travel within Europe and/or to China (Hangzhou headquarters and Hong Kong).
