Offer Description The Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems—IFISC (CSIC-UIB), a Research Centre of Excellence located in Palma (Majorca), has two PhD openings within the Horizon Europe Doctoral Training Network POSTDIGITAL Plus ( project link ).
POST-DIGITAL Plus focuses on brain-inspired analogue computing with light, exploiting its potential speed and energy advantages over computing with electrons, as well as the advantages analogue computing offers over digital computing. The project will design and implement novel artificial neural networks inspired by the adaptive intelligence of biological brains in exploiting parallel processing.
POST-DIGITAL Plus brings together 14 leading academic and industrial stakeholders (including Hewlett Packard, IBM and Thales) in optical and neuromorphic computing.
The two PhD positions are hosted at IFISC (ifisc.uib-csic.es) in Palma (Majorca, Spain) and the subsequent PhD degrees will be awarded by the University of the Balearic Islands (www.uib.eu). The successful candidates will work on one of the following research topics:
1) Coupled laser networks for information processing. The project focuses on implementing fibre-coupled semiconductor laser networks for ultra-fast information processing.
2) Optical computing with few-mode and multimode fibres. The project uses spatial information obtained from mode mixing along fibre propagation in few-mode (multimode) fibres for optical computing.
The topics will be allocated following the selection process, taking into consideration the candidates' backgrounds, skills and areas of interest.
The successful candidates will collaborate closely with Professors Apostolos Argyris and Claudio R. Mirasso at IFISC. Their related work may be viewed at the following link: link .
They will receive a very attractive salary package comprising Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Living and Mobility Allowances, in line with MSCA rules and each successful candidate's individual circumstances. Where eligible, they will also receive a Family Allowance. The gross salary will amount to approximately €33,700 per annum (for a maximum of three years, excluding family allowance). In accordance with the MSCA work programme, selected candidates with families will also receive the Family Allowance. The salary will rise every calendar year in line with those for Spanish public employees.
All corresponding tax deductions according to Spanish law will be applied to the salary, providing benefits such as national social security and health insurance, maternity/paternity leave, etc.
Successful candidates who do not live in Majorca on the closing date for the job offer will receive an additional €2,500 relocation package.
About IFISC IFISC (Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems) was established in 2007 by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) as a joint research institute. Its mission is to undertake cross-disciplinary and strategic research in complex systems in line with the established scientific approach amongst physicists. IFISC is a 'Maria de Maeztu' Unit of Excellence tackling ambitious theoretical and experimental challenges at the interface of physics of complex systems and interdisciplinary applications in biology, ecology, photonics and socio-technical systems. IFISC is renowned for its scientific excellence, integrating researchers from diverse backgrounds, increasing the hiring of female scientists, international training and career development programmes, and transferring knowledge to industry and public organisations.
