Context And Mission
The Earth Science department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center searches for one junior developer willing to work on the implementation of an operational climate service based on current research prototypes developed in the framework of S2S4E projects. The successful candidate will support the developments to set up this system, port it to Earth IT infrastructure (to HPC if needed), and employ state-of-the-art technologies in data management, post-processing, and software development.






Key Duties Join the team in charge of developing the tool Maintain the operational deployment on different HPC platforms (if needed) Participate in the data management of the operational forecast system Support the users inside and outside the center by adding new features Participate actively in the extension of the Decision Support tool Explore solutions to integrate seasonal predictions in an operational real-time forecast system Interact with Computational Earth Sciences scientists to improve the performance and reliability of the system Interact with climate scientists to understand processes and model configuration Requirements Education
Bachelor in Computer Science, Physics, or related discipline. Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
Good development skills in Python and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, etc.) Good experience with object-oriented programming Experience on Web Interfaces or interactive Dashboards Experience in Earth System models Experience in Earth Sciences file types (NetCDF, GRIB, HDF, etc.), tools (CDO, NCO), and managing large volumes of data Keen to learn how to develop scientific applications on parallel computers Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Previous experience in a scientific area related to the research position Competences
Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both earth and computer scientists Proactive attitude and motivation to improve existing solutions Fluency in English Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to take initiative, prioritize, and work under deadlines Ability to work both independently and within a team Motivation to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment Conditions The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department Full-time contract (37.5h/week), good working environment, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support for relocation procedures Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December Salary: competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona Starting date: 01/10/2024 Applications procedure and process
